SBL proposal

이틀전에 SBL에서 전체 회원들에게 이메일을 보냈습니다. 마감일이 이틀남았다고. 아뿔사! 작년에도 게으름 피우다가 제안서를 제출을 하지 못했는데, 올해도? 제안서(proposal) 작성하려면 품이 보통들어가는 것이 아닙니다. 명료, 깔끔하고 그러면서도 주목만 할 만한 학문적인 아이디어가 담겨야 합니다. 그렇게 만들어 제출해도 선택되기가 쉽지 않습니다. 이렇게 촉박해서 작업해서는 쉽게 제안서가 나올 수 가 없습니다. 설상가상, 어제 있었던 논찬준비, 저녁식사모임, 오늘은 자동차 수리, 그리고 달라스에서의 지방회모임....어쩔 수 없이, 오늘 밤이 마감인데, 마감 두어시간을 앞두고 후다닥 어설프게 준비해서 제출했습니다. 두 섹션, Gospel of Mark 그리고, Scoial-Scientific Criticism of the New Testament에 제출했는데 두 섹션 모두 지원자가 많이 몰리는 인기 섹션이다보니, 채택가능성은 아주아주 적을 것이라고 생각합니다. 그래도 혹시 모르니....

Rumors and Politics in Rome and Mark

In Rome, where has been traditionally recognized as the place of origin for Mark’s Gospel, rumors were a central channel of communication by which most of the population mainly communicated and influenced. Particularly, rumors could take on a political connotation that affected Roman socio-political life. Rumors were not simply an interactional channel by which people shared the news and reports with others in the limited circumstance of communication, but also an active and influential vehicle for changing society and power dynamics in Rome. Based on this social and cultural circumstance where rumors dominated and functioned as a political means, I argue that Mark’s Gospel is filled with rumors, even though hardly any attention has been paid to rumors in Markan scholarship. Furthermore, I argue that some of the Markan rumors play a political function challenging Roman power.
